Zone of Possible Agreement
The range within which a negotiated deal is possible — the overlap between the minimum a seller will accept and the maximum a buyer is willing to pay.
ZOPA was developed by Harvard negotiation researchers as part of the interest-based negotiation framework. Understanding the ZOPA helps negotiators avoid two common mistakes: walking away from deals within the ZOPA (leaving value on the table by not recognizing an agreement was possible) and wasting time pursuing deals outside the ZOPA (spending resources negotiating positions that can never be reconciled).
Identifying the ZOPA requires understanding the other party's BATNA — Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement. A seller's minimum is determined by what they can get elsewhere; a buyer's maximum is determined by what alternatives they have. Skilled negotiators invest heavily in understanding the other party's alternatives because it reveals the true boundaries of the ZOPA — which is almost always wider than the other party initially signals.
