XML Financial Reporting
A standardized digital format (eXtensible Markup Language) used to structure and share financial data in a machine-readable way — the foundation of XBRL financial reporting.
XBRL (eXtensible Business Reporting Language) is the financial reporting application of XML. Each financial data element — revenue, net income, total assets — is tagged with a standardized identifier from a published taxonomy. When Goldman Sachs files its 10-K, every number is tagged so that a computer can instantly understand what it represents and compare it to the same tagged number from JPMorgan's filing.
The transition to XBRL reporting has enabled an explosion in quantitative financial analysis. Data providers can instantly aggregate standardized financial data across thousands of companies, and algorithms can screen for specific financial characteristics at scale. This democratized access to structured financial data has accelerated the growth of quantitative and algorithmic investing — making financial analysis faster, cheaper, and more comprehensive than the era of manual data collection.
