Wirehouse
A large, full-service brokerage firm that offers a comprehensive range of financial products and services through a nationwide network of financial advisors — the 'Big Four' are Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, UBS, and Wells Fargo Advisors.
The term 'wirehouse' dates to the early 20th century when large brokerage firms were among the first businesses to use telegraph wire networks to transmit stock prices and trade confirmations across their national branch systems. The infrastructure advantage that defined wirehouses then has been largely commoditized — but the brand recognition, product platform, and advisor training infrastructure remain significant advantages.
Many advisors have left wirehouses for independent Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) firms, where they operate as fiduciaries, have access to a broader product universe, and are free from proprietary product pressure. The independent RIA channel has grown rapidly as clients have become more aware of conflicts of interest at large brokerage firms and the value of fiduciary advice.
