Treasury Bills
Short-term government debt instruments maturing in weeks to a year — considered the safest investment in the world and used as the benchmark for the risk-free rate.
T-bills work differently from regular bonds: they're sold at a discount to face value rather than paying a coupon. You buy a £100 T-bill for £95, and at maturity (say, 6 months later) the government pays you £100. The difference (£5 on £95 invested) is your return — approximately 5.26% annualised. No coupon payments during the holding period — just the difference between purchase price and face value at maturity.
How to buy UK government T-bills: through the UK Debt Management Office (direct auctions), through a stockbroker (via the secondary market or gilt funds), or indirectly through money market funds that hold T-bills and pay daily interest (available through most investment platforms — an easy, liquid way to earn near T-bill rates without managing individual bonds). In the US, TreasuryDirect.gov allows direct purchase with no fees. The key advantage of T-bills over savings accounts: for large amounts above FSCS limits (£85,000 in the UK), T-bills carry zero counterparty risk — you're lending to the government, not a bank that could theoretically fail.
