Trade Deficit
When a country imports more goods and services than it exports.
A trade deficit is not automatically bad — it can mean strong consumer demand and a growing economy. However, a very large deficit for many years can weaken the currency and create debt.
Countries try to reduce trade deficits through better exports, tariffs, or currency adjustments.
It's like a shop that buys £100,000 of stock but only sells £80,000 worth — the difference has to be paid somehow.
Real world: The United States has run a trade deficit for decades. It buys more from China, Europe, and other countries than it sells to them. The difference is financed by foreigners buying U.S. assets and bonds.
💡 Trade deficits show where money is flowing — they are a symptom, not the disease itself.
