Reversing Entries
Special journal entries made at the beginning of a new period to undo certain adjusting entries from the end of the last period.
Reversing entries are optional but they make recording regular transactions much easier. They are most commonly used for accrued expenses and accrued revenues. The reversing entry is the exact opposite of the prior adjusting entry. It's like hitting the undo button on last month's homework so this month's work starts clean and simple.
Real world: In January you reverse the December accrued wages entry so when you actually pay the employees in January, you don't have to split the payment between two different months.
💡 Reversing entries are a time-saving trick that prevents double-counting or messy split entries — most accountants use them for payroll and interest.
