Revenue Recognition Principle
Revenue is recorded when it is earned, not necessarily when cash is received.
This principle is especially important for subscription businesses, long-term contracts, and anything sold on credit. New standards (IFRS 15 and ASC 606) made revenue recognition much stricter and more consistent worldwide.
It's recording the sale the moment the customer receives the value, not when the money hits the bank.
Real world: A software company sells a one-year subscription in December. Under revenue recognition, it records only one month's revenue in December and spreads the rest over the next 11 months.
💡 Revenue recognition stops companies from counting money before they have actually earned it.
