Producer Surplus
The extra money producers make when they sell something for more than the lowest price they would have accepted.
Producer surplus plus consumer surplus equals total economic welfare. It's the benefit sellers get from market trades. Taxes or price controls usually reduce it.It's like a lemonade stand kid who was willing to sell cups for 50 cents but the line is so long they charge $2 — the extra $1.50 per cup is producer surplus.
Real world: Oil companies that can pump oil profitably at $40 a barrel but sell it for $80 make huge producer surplus on every barrel.
💡 Producer surplus is why businesses love busy markets — they get to pocket the difference between their costs and the happy price customers are paying.
