Play-to-Earn Gaming
Video games built on blockchain technology where players earn cryptocurrency or NFTs with real monetary value through gameplay — blurring the line between gaming and working.
P2E economics work (or don't work) through a token economy: the game mints tokens as rewards for gameplay. These tokens have value only as long as new players are buying in and spending money on the game's ecosystem. When player growth slows, token demand falls, prices collapse, earnings collapse, players leave, demand falls further — a death spiral. Most P2E games have followed this pattern because the "earn" side needs constant new money flowing in to sustain it, making many structurally similar to pyramid schemes even when unintentionally designed that way.
More sustainable models are emerging — play-and-own games where blockchain is used for genuine asset ownership (you own your in-game items and can trade them) rather than as a money-printing mechanism. Games like Gods Unchained and Illuvium are attempting this approach. The core value proposition of blockchain in gaming — true ownership of digital assets that persist beyond any single game — remains compelling. The execution of building games that are fun first and financially rewarding second (rather than the reverse) is the unsolved challenge the industry is still working through.
