Paid Newsletter
A subscription-based publication sent directly to readers' inboxes — readers pay a monthly or annual fee for exclusive content, analysis, or insights.
Paid newsletters typically run on platforms like Substack, Beehiiv, or Ghost. These handle payments, email delivery, subscriber management, and even a public website — making the technical side simple so writers can focus entirely on content. Substack takes a 10% cut of subscription revenue; other platforms charge flat monthly fees instead.
The economics are compelling: 1,000 subscribers paying $10/month = $10,000/month in recurring revenue. Unlike ad-supported content, paid newsletters don't need millions of readers — they need a few thousand people who genuinely value the writing enough to pay for it. That smaller, more loyal, paying audience is often more valuable than a massive free following. The challenge is getting those first 100, then 500, then 1,000 paying subscribers — which requires either a large existing audience, exceptional content, or a very specific niche with no good free alternatives.
