Matching Principle
Expenses should be recorded in the same period as the revenues they help generate.
The matching principle is the reason we have accruals and deferrals. It makes the income statement show a true picture of profitability for each period instead of wild swings caused by cash timing.
It's making sure the cost of the pizza is recorded in the same month you sell the pizza.
Real world: A company pays for a year-long advertising campaign in January. The matching principle says the cost should be spread across all 12 months, not all recorded in January.
💡 Matching makes profit numbers honest and comparable across periods.
