Kill Rate
The percentage of new business opportunities, leads, or projects that a company or investor decides not to pursue — a measure of selectivity and decision-making discipline.
Kill rate applies beyond investing. Sales teams track the percentage of leads they disqualify early in the process — a high early kill rate means better qualification and less time wasted on deals that will never close. Project managers kill low-ROI projects to protect capacity for high-priority work. Product teams kill features that don't meet the threshold for user value or strategic fit.
The discipline to kill decisions early — before significant time, money, and emotional investment have been sunk — is one of the hardest skills in business. Sunk cost fallacy makes it psychologically painful to abandon something you've already invested in. Organizations with strong kill-rate discipline actively counteract this by reviewing opportunities against forward-looking criteria, not backward-looking investment justifications.
