Interest Rate
The percentage charged for borrowing money, or earned for lending it — the price of money in the economy.
There are many types of interest rates, but they're all ultimately connected to the central bank's benchmark rate. From there, banks add a margin based on their costs and profit targets, and then add more depending on the borrower's creditworthiness. The riskier you are, the higher your rate — this is why payday loans charge 400% APR and government bonds pay 4-5%.
Interest rates affect everything. Low rates encourage borrowing and spending (stimulus). High rates encourage saving and punish debt (cooling). They influence currency values, stock market valuations, housing prices, and corporate investment decisions. Understanding interest rates is the key to understanding almost everything happening in the financial world at any given time.
