Income Summary Account
A temporary account used only during closing to collect all revenues and expenses before transferring the net profit or loss to Retained Earnings.
The Income Summary account is used only at closing time and is zeroed out immediately after. It makes the closing process cleaner and easier to follow. It's like a big mixing bowl where you dump all the money that came in and all the money that went out before you figure out how much is left.
Real world: At year-end you close all revenue accounts into Income Summary, then close all expense accounts into it, and whatever is left in Income Summary is the net income that goes to Retained Earnings.
💡 You never see Income Summary on any financial statement — it's just a helpful backstage tool during closing.
