GDP
Gross Domestic Product — the total monetary value of all goods and services produced within a country's borders in a given period.
GDP is calculated three ways, all of which should give the same answer: the expenditure approach (adds up all spending: consumer spending + business investment + government spending + net exports), the income approach (adds up all income: wages, profits, rent), and the production approach (adds up the value added at each stage of production).
GDP has well-known limitations. It counts all economic activity — including things that aren't beneficial, like healthcare costs from pollution. It misses unpaid work (parenting, volunteering). And it says nothing about inequality — a high GDP could coexist with poverty concentrated among the majority. That's why economists increasingly look at supplementary measures like the Human Development Index or median household income alongside raw GDP.
