Equity Financing
Raising capital by selling ownership stakes in a company to investors, rather than borrowing money.
Equity financing comes in several forms: angel investment (individuals investing early-stage), venture capital (professional funds investing in growth companies), private equity (firms buying stakes in mature businesses), and public equity (selling shares on the stock market via an IPO). Each stage of a company's life tends to attract different equity sources with different expectations and terms.
The cost of equity is often underappreciated by founders. Unlike debt (where the cost is the explicit interest rate), equity's cost is the future value of the ownership surrendered. If you give up 20% of your company for $1 million and the company eventually sells for $100 million, that 20% stake cost you $20 million in exit proceeds — 20 times what the investor paid. That's not a complaint — it's the deal — but founders should understand what equity is truly worth before giving it away.
