Equity
Ownership — the portion of an asset or company that belongs to its owners after all debts are paid.
Equity shows up everywhere in finance. In a company's balance sheet, shareholders' equity = assets minus liabilities. In investing, equity refers to stocks (ownership stakes in companies). In real estate, it's the portion of property you actually own free and clear. In startups, equity is what founders grant to investors and employees — a share of future value.
The appeal of equity is upside potential. Unlike a bond (which pays a fixed rate), equity participation grows with the company. The risk is that equity holders take losses first. This risk-reward tradeoff is the foundation of capital markets: those who take more risk (equity holders) expect higher returns than those who take less risk (bondholders).
