Deferred Tax Asset
A future tax saving that the company expects to realise because of temporary differences or tax losses carried forward.
Deferred tax assets are only recognised if it is probable the company will have enough future taxable profit to use them. They are carefully reviewed every year and can be reduced (impaired) if the outlook changes.
It's like having a voucher for a future discount on your tax bill — the saving is real but you can only use it later.
Real world: A company makes a loss this year and can carry it forward to reduce next year's taxable profit. It records a deferred tax asset because it expects to pay less tax in the future when it becomes profitable again.
💡 Deferred tax asset is good news — it means the taxman owes you a discount in the future.
