Customer Segmentation
The process of dividing a customer base into distinct groups based on shared characteristics, behaviors, or needs — allowing more targeted and effective marketing and product development.
Segmentation can be based on demographics (age, income, location, job title), psychographics (values, lifestyle, personality), behavior (purchase frequency, product usage, loyalty), or needs (what problem they're solving). The most actionable segmentations combine multiple dimensions — 'young urban professionals who buy premium products and respond to sustainability messaging' is far more useful than 'age 25-34'.
RFM analysis (Recency, Frequency, Monetary Value) is one of the most powerful behavioral segmentation tools in e-commerce. It segments customers by when they last bought, how often they buy, and how much they spend — creating groups like 'champions' (bought recently, often, and spent a lot) versus 'at-risk' (used to be great customers but haven't bought in a while). Each group gets a different intervention.
