Crypto Staking
Locking up your cryptocurrency in a Proof of Stake network to help validate transactions — earning regular rewards in return, similar to earning interest.
Staking rewards come in two forms: new token issuance (the network mints new coins and distributes them to stakers — similar to how a central bank creates money, except governed by code) and transaction fees (a portion of fees paid by network users goes to validators). The annual percentage yield (APY) varies by network: Solana typically offers 6-8%, Cardano 3-5%, Polkadot 10-14%, Cosmos 15-20%. Higher yields often reflect higher inflation rates or higher network risk.
Staking risks: lock-up periods (some networks require coins to be locked for days, weeks, or months — you can't sell during price crashes), slashing (if your validator node misbehaves or goes offline, a portion of your stake is destroyed as punishment), smart contract risk (liquid staking protocols like Lido could have bugs), and regulatory risk (the SEC sued Kraken in 2023 over its staking service, raising questions about whether staking-as-a-service constitutes an unregistered security). Staking is generally considered one of the more passive and lower-risk ways to earn yield in crypto — but lower risk in crypto context is still significant risk in absolute terms.
