Crypto Lending
Earning interest by lending your cryptocurrency to borrowers through centralised platforms or DeFi protocols — or borrowing against your crypto holdings without selling them.
Crypto lending has two sides. As a lender: deposit crypto on a platform or DeFi protocol. Earn interest paid in crypto. Centralised platforms (now reduced in number after 2022 collapses) include Nexo and institutional OTC desks. DeFi protocols like Aave and Compound allow direct on-chain lending with transparent interest rates set by supply and demand. As a borrower: deposit crypto as collateral, borrow stablecoins or other crypto against it. Useful for accessing liquidity without selling — avoiding capital gains tax events or maintaining long-term positions.
The critical risk difference between CeFi (centralised) and DeFi lending: on DeFi protocols, your collateral is held in a smart contract — the code liquidates it automatically if it falls below the required ratio, but there's no human who can misuse your funds. On CeFi platforms, you are trusting the company to actually hold your assets and not use them for risky investments — as Celsius, BlockFi, and Voyager were all doing secretly with depositor funds before their collapses. "Your keys, not your coins" applies here: DeFi lending with verifiable smart contracts is significantly safer than trusting a centralised company with your assets.
